Become a better trainer by training a chicken! The process is an adventure and revelation.
Training a chicken is a stretch and a fantastic boost to your mechanical skills. Chickens are faster than the average dog so your timing and coordination skills are quickly improved. Dog trainers are amazed at how much they learn from their work with chickens!
WHY SHOULD DOG TRAINERS TRAIN CHICKENS? Because there is no baggage associated with chickens!
Trainer’s are not “bonded” to their chickens. Chickens do not have big brown eyes. Trainers do not have bad (or good!) chicken training habits because they’ve never trained a chicken before, thus avoiding the baggage often taken to dog training workshops. You will not be showing your chickens at the next performance event, nor will you be taking them home, so there is no pressure on what will happen in the future. You probably do not have a library full of chicken training books and DVD's to influence you, much less televisions shows on chicken training.
Chickens will freeze or fly away if they don’t like the way you are training them. Unlike dogs, you will know immediately if you are taking advantage of a chicken or pushing too hard too fast. Chickens don’t give their trainers a second chances as often as our dogs do.
Read what Don Hanson, former president of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, has to say about chicken training.
Here's how it works!
The hands-on chicken portion of the course will consist of many short (5-10 minute) training sessions throughout the day. You will participate in observation exercises, use of an ethogram and you will learn about capturing behavior. Systematic desensitization, criteria definition and selection, latency (limited hold) will be discussed. You will also be working with shaping, discrimination, extinction, coaching skills, constructive critiquing, lateral thinking and problem solving.
We will provide you everything you need for this experience.
IMPORTANT!
Please leave your dogs at home. Legacy does not have crating or boarding facilities and our parking lot has no shade. It is not appropriate to leave your dog in the your car in our parking lot during the workshop. Although we are primarily a dog training business, not all of our chicken training clients are 'dog people'.
Our workshops are presented in a relaxed atmosphere. Plan on having a good time! There will be several breaks in the morning and afternoon and a 60-minute break for lunch. A light sandwich lunch will be provided. Coffee, tea, pop, and light snacks will be available all day. We accommodate only meat and non-meat meal options.
Workshop hours are 9:00 AM to 4:15 PM
