Puppy HeadStart (STAR Puppy Program) (check calendar)
“As the Twig is Bent, So Grows the Tree. Research has shown that the most impressionable periods for a puppy’s mental development occur before 16 weeks of age. Puppies are learning every minute, with or without our influence. The trick is to provide an environment to make learning good manners easy and learning inappropriate behavior difficult. Legacy’s puppy program makes sure you don’t miss the critical windows of opportunity. We support the American Kennel Club S.T.A.R. Puppy Program. Puppies with early Socialization, Training, Activity, and a Responsible Owner will be STARS!
STAR Puppy includes six 30-minute sessions on the following topics:
- Care and Handling
- Puppy Manners Training I & II
- Getting Along
- Living Happily Together
- Making Connections
If you’d like to attend STAR Puppy Class, please discuss your plans with your veterinarian. Puppies may start classes between eight and fourteen weeks of age. Sessions are on a rotational schedule that allows puppies to begin classes at any time. The classes meet Tuesdays at 6 PM and Wednesdays at 11 AM.
After completion of the class, interested owners may take the American Kennel Club S.T.A.R. Puppy test. Upon passing, owners may enroll in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program. The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy program welcomes all dogs including purebreds and mixed breeds.
A key component of the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program is a responsible owner. Our Canine Good Citizen Responsible Dog Owner’s Pledge is for the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program, too. Responsibility should start the moment you decide to add a new dog or puppy to your family.

Dog agility is a dog sport in which a dog and handler team works through an obstacle course in a race for both time and accuracy. Dogs run off-leash and ‘naked’ with no food or toys as incentives, and the handler can touch neither dog nor obstacles. Consequently the handler's controls are limited to voice, movement, and various body signals, requiring a strong partnership between dog and handler. Obstacles include tunnels, jumps, ramps, and various other objects such as weave poles, gates and hoops.

Team Teaching
You, your dog and a Legacy instructor make up the "team". Team Teaching provides more support than a group class can offer. Your dog's temperament, your own physical ability and/or scheduling difficulties can more appropriately be addressed in Team Teaching. Legacy provides one-on-one instruction in the Pet Dog Manners exercises. An instructor will help train the dog, but will then transfer the skills to you. Some clients take Team Teaching and Pet Dog Manners at the same time, automatic help with homework!
The cost for three 30 minute sessions is $95.
Private Lessons
Private lessons are available for you and your dog to brush up on basic manners or to learn a new behavior not covered in PDM. Continuing education topics can be introduced individually in a private lesson format. We work with you to customize the lessons specifically for you and your dog. Private lessons are for dogs and owners who have completed Legacy’s Pet Dog Manners class.
$75 for a 45 minute lesson. Please contact the Legacy Office for further information.
Semi-private Lessons
Invite a friend or two and create your own mini-group. More expensive than group classes, but less expensive than private lessons with the advantages of both. Work with a friend or neighbor or two with lots of instructor attention. Instruction is customized to the needs and desires of those participating. Please contact the Legacy office for further information.
Behavior Consultations
Behavior Consultations give immediate aid to families with dogs at risk. Generally these dogs need more attention than what we would be able to give in our Pet Dog Manners' classes. These private consultations evaluate and profile the dog and the situation. We customize a program to reduce or change the problem behavior. These specialized consultations are $200 for the first 90 minute session. Please contact the Legacy office for more details.
Community Workshops
These are 90-minute workshops presented by Terry Ryan on a variety of subjects. Pre-registration is required, workshops are open to the public and are for humans only (no dogs, please).(check calendar for specific dates)

Home Alone - Help for the Latchkey Dog
When left home alone, some dogs act out in troublesome ways. You might come home to discover your furniture chewed on or your door scratched. Perhaps your dog had diarrhea or his mouth and coat are wet from stress panting and drooling. A generalized term for this type of behavior is the Latchkey Dog Syndrome. The dog is not doing this to get even with you for leaving him alone. His actions are a reaction to his environment. This type of behavior can be prevented or improved. Find out more by attending the Home Alone workshop.
-

Your New Puppy
Puppies are like wet clay, waiting to be shaped. Like clay, you need to work with the puppy early on or he will become "set" in his ways. The puppy is learning every minute, with or without our influence. The trick is to provide an environment to make learning good manners easy and learning inappropriate behaviors difficult. Find out how you can connect the "plug" and "sockets" in your puppies brains.
